Currently, in the UK at least, the news is very concerned about the internet, social media and AI imges. Items like this one: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce8gz8g2qnlo are plentiful.
It seems some what well timed that an article I wrote for H&E well over a month ago found itself in my letter box this morning.
In it is my exploration of issues women face on general social media, and how that affects the positive promotion of naturism I wrote this:
"There is another fake version of the naturist woman on the rise: The photo-real AI woman and some naturist websites seem to actually be encouraging this travesty! Using AI videos and images, that appear genuine at first glance, further confuse the legitimacy of naturism, create fake impressions and beg the question: What is wrong with naturism that it has to rely on false reality to present itself as a lifestyle worth joining?"
The actual printed version (as is often the case) tones down my words - removing descriptions like "travesty", but the general message, though softer, still remains.
In truth much of general social media is out of control and the use of AI is just part of it. Links to copy cat websites of high street names that take your money and send out no products, fake news stories about celebrities having illnesses or being arrested, fake profiles with fake people using stolen images and lying about everything, then there is the bullying, bad behaviour, misleading and negative rhetoric . Naturism is only one victim, but the sexual misuse of nudity and naturism does our life choice great harm and discourages countless people from staying with naturism, trying naturism, and trusting naturism. And naturism is caught in the crossfire in the war against internet misconduct - nudity is mistrusted, children need to be protected from the internet and abuse but not from genuine naturism, promoting real naturism on the internet is getting harder and harder.
Though considering all this - this topic is primarily about photoreal AI images. Basically fake images!
The use of AI to write books, write articles, write songs or jokes is something that people in that line are concerned about. The use of AI to create paintings and drawing is likewise something artists are concerned about. The use of AI to decide how we feel and think about things as humans, is maybe something all humans should worry about. The use of AI videos to make things appear more than they are - dogs doing tricks, proff of aliens, freakish skills etc are something we should all feel tricked by. The use of fake nudes and fake videos and voice recording of individuals, particularly celebrities and politicians is something individuals involved do worry about, and all of us should worry about as it could happen to any of us.
But what about naturism. The interest in creating fake nudes feeds the worlds obsession with sexualising the human body, even to the extent of making people naked that are not naked or not even real people. Instead of the naturist idea that nudity is simply not a big deal AI nudity makes nudity a very big deal. It doesn't "normalise nudity " but abnormalises it: nudity is so unusual and desired that we have to create it through fake means. Naturism is natural, AI nudes, like AI itself, is totally unnatural. It brings nudity into disrepute, it forces nudity on people who do not choose to be naked, and builds resentment on the idea of nudity. It makes the human race fear nudity even more by seeing it as a way of abusing, misusing and lying - and an unhealthy obsession. The more the human race creates fake imagery and desires nudity - the more naturists will fear sharing their naturism and even being naturists. These fake images are also often designed to fit fit into the media's idea of perfection. The greater the level of expectation built around nudity and the human body - the harder it become for those with "imperfect" bodies to feel comfortable about what they are born with and sharing their bodies with the world. The photoreal AI image is the enemy of naturism and is definitely a travesty - representing indivduals, humanity, the body and naturism in a false and distorted way.
There is a naturist website that has used dozens of AI videos of seemingly real people - men and women from all over the world - to not just sell naturism but sell the website (I do not think it deserves naming as I do not want people to give it the footfall that checking out these fake videos would bring - traffic raises a website's ranking). Instead, imagine if ANW created fake videos of AI generated young men and woman voicing my written words about naturism and ANW and have them talking about how great ANW is and how much they love being part of ANW! This is what these AI videos are doing, and unless you really look, or maybe do an AI checker you will probably believe they are real! Surely this is false advertising, surely if people then paid to join ANW and found that these individuals are not on the site they would have the right to feel tricked. It would be simpler to see the wrong here if it was an AI video of a famous celebrity - let's say Helen Mirren as she has expressed an attachment to naturism - to have this celebrity say they love ANW and are part of ANW would be totally wrong. But surely the case is still the same if the person is 100% made up - in fact it is maybe a little worse because it is more likely to fool people.
This isn't just about the fake selling of a website but it is about the bigger picture of naturism lying to society. Why do we need to create fake videos? Why would we want to? It is turning the idea of undressing people into a false situation, and suggesting naturism is not to be trusted, and not genuinely supported, that nudity is more important than reality. We shouldn't be looking at stripping AI people in a look to make naturism real. Naturism is not about stripping away clothes, it is about having a healthy and honest approach to not wearing clothes. Photo real AI images and videos suggest nothing healthy or honest, and should be avoided at all time. If we cannot portray and truth around naturism then we should not be promoting it at all. Photoreal AI would work in portraying a libertine/swining/sexualised approach to nudity - its forced and concerning interest in nudity would work well in that lifestyle. But never naturism. We do not undress to gain attention from others, so why would we undress fake people to get attention from others? Why would the website I refer to above create fake videos of dozens of fake young people? To attract attention, to draw people in and to falsely encourage people to buy access to the website! This has nothing to do with naturism.
