Naturism - The Natural Choice
In 2022 we asked people to Get Back to Naturism “A reflection of our want to see people enjoying naturism again after Covid lockdowns, to combat the misuse of naturism on the internet and an acknowledgement that naturism is about reclaiming the innocence we felt for nudity as a child and the acceptance of nudity that is built within our nature.”
In 2023 we created the campaign of Nurturing Naturism For Everyone For Ever. Promoting the idea that “naturism takes care of us and we have to take care of naturism. A mutually beneficial relationship. In the same way that ANW provides a community platform for naturists and naturists provide ANW with that community – giving it their backing through time, respect and funding. Neither can exist without the genuine intentions of both.”
In 2024 we wished to take these messages further and introduced the Get Real with Naturism campaign.
The Get Real Campaign asks us to:
Set Real Goals – naturism has an uphill journey to become properly embraced.
Support Real Naturism – stay true to the meaning of naturism is the only way to attempt to reach those goals.
Use Real Logic – naturism is for all people and has a universal appeal. Keeping this in mind is the best way to ensure we keep our sights on the meaning of naturism.
Embrace Real Humanity – naturism is part of our make-up and history. That is why we are logically drawn to it.
Recognise Real Positives – reject the negatives: bad behaviour on beaches, inappropriate and damaging sharing on social media, self serving influencers sending out confusing messages, events and venues that take naturism into non-naturist territory... we all know the various things that are undermining naturism and discouraging people from seeing the sensible logic of naturism. Be demanding: ask yourself what message does this send out to those new to naturism?
Present Real People and Real Behaviour – don't be pulled into pretending, the world is becoming increasing Artificial. Fake images, fake bodies, fake profiles, fake attitudes. Naturism represents positive truth and openness. Pretence sends out negative attitudes and bad learning experiences.
Keep ANW Real – we cannot change the world over night or put a halt on all damage to naturism – but if we work together to ensure ANW at least continues to show Real Naturism then we can ensure there is always somewhere that people can come to Get Real. At the heart of Get Real is the idea that naturism is not some sort of false, fake and forced way of living but should be considered a simple aspect of life, and is suitable for everyone.
To Get (Understand) Naturism is to Get (Become) Real about being yourself and being part of this world. Get Real suggests that when the circumstances make sense there is little logic to thinking that clothes are needed or some sort of rule.
When we present Real Naturism we show that naturism is, very much The Natural Choice.
Considering The Natural Choice.
The Natural Choice as three words means so much in the modern world: a world where we have many pressing needs, beliefs and concerns.
The Natural Choice when it comes to our food can represent our need to eat healthy organic non-processed products that help our body and our planet. Taking those choices into our wider expenditure - from buying toilet roll and shampoo, to our garden furniture, cars and clothing – all show that we are wanting to represent ourselves as people who care about what we do and the future.
Opting for The Natural Choice suggests that we are in tune with what we want, who we are and what is best for our world. We hopefully use it to vote for the best politicians, give awards for the best candidates, select our life partners, head down career paths, consider the birth and raising of our children, and make many life decisions big and small.
The very idea of being Natural is seen as vitality important to our happiness and an incredibly positive way of describing things. The unspoilt natural beauty of the landscape, and we see the natural beauty of men or women just as worthy of admiration. We regard the natural colour or curls of a person's hair, their natural body, the natural aspects of their behaviour towards us and others: he/she may be rich/famous/genius, yet they are unspoilt by it; he came over so natural in the interview; she is so natural gifted.
The idea of being proud of who we naturally are is maybe a stronger premise in the 21st Century than it has ever been before. Our natural sexuality, our natural physicality, our natural personalities are embraced and acknowledged with a great sense of importance. Even our natural fears, faults and failings are considered, within reason, something we and others should recognise and nurture.
The Natural Choice therefore represents the best, most sound and healthiest way to live both physically and mentally, the best options we have for the best life, the most honest and admirable behaviour, and embracing our nature in it's myriad of options.
The Natural Choice In Naturism
As a lifestyle naturism is very much about embracing our nature. The word naturism basically means a belief in nature.
The word dates back to the 1840's and supports a return to nature: advocating for a lifestyle aligned with natural principles, a worship of nature, as well as the clothing free life choice. It has therefore been linked to natural medical practices, philosophy and religion as well as the naked lifestyle. The spread of the industrial age and the accompanying idea of social degeneration lead to a desire to return to a greener and more natural lifestyle embracing choices like vegetarianism, exercise and holistic therapies, and natural medicine, as well as considering concerns about alcohol and tobacco, and a dislike of physically restrictive clothing, like corsets.
Almost 200 years on and such concerns and ideas remain with us and are as relevant as ever. Naturism may be more about choosing to be clothing free, but it still has strong connections to outdoor living, green spaces, sporting activities and holistic health. Many naturists see their naturism as just part of their natural and healthy life choices, and we are well aware of the environmental impact that the clothing industry is having on the world.
The emotional support offered by naturism is rejoiced by the modern naturist. Learning to love yourself and feel comfortable in your own skin is a valuable asset in this harsh and hard world. Naturism offers this and more. Encouraging everyone to accept each for who they are, find true equality and remove judgement. The delicious, open, honesty you wear when you are naked with each other is healing on an individual level and on a social level. A well run naturist club is one of the few places where communities actually work together supporting each other with a natural harmony. Everyone regardless of age, gender, skills and background can find their place within the group, and within the wider naturist community.
Naturism offers traditional and logical living that can help us all feel a little happier, a little saner, a little healthier and a little more real.
The Natural Choice is Nature's Choice
Just as naturism grew in popularity as a logical way of trying to reject the modern world, it is rejected by the modern world through a set of illogical ideas based on modern living. Summed up in 10 Poorly Conceived Reasons for Not Trying Naturism. The modern human assumes that social nudity is “just not right” purely based on viewing nudity through modern eyes. The fear of being judged, the idea that nudity is sexual, the concern that it is basically wrong is all based on modern obsessions, modern fears and modern messages.
In reality choosing naturism as described in 10 Reasons to be a Naturist is the most natural thing in the world. It is why when people first try it they often find themselves amazed at how easy and relaxed they feel. It is in our DNA. It is part of who we are, our history, our humanity, our instinctive lives.
There is an assumption that it is something we have to learn to do. That there is some skill involved, some sort of knack to be acquired. But in reality it is about unlearning rather than learning. Rejecting all of the nonsense we have been taught about being naked and letting our natural instincts kick in. All of the things we fear about trying naturism seem incredibly foolish when we allow ourselves to simply be naturists. For naturism is inside us all, just waiting to be embraced. Everyone is a naturist, but most people are in denial; but it is there in our love of bath time, the fascination in the human body, and the thrill of being able to let go occasionally and just be yourself. Naturism is the ultimate way to respect your human self and acknowledge that you are totally unique simply because you are you. No frills, no fuss, no pretence and no dressing up to impress.
In a world where we are always worrying about how we appear to others, it is refreshing to realise that we have been worrying unnecessarily because in reality it simply doesn't matter, no one really cares. People actually have more important things to think about. If we lived in a world where everyone was naked we simply couldn't spend all of our time sexualising the opposite sex, judging people for how they measure up and fearing how others view us. The human race naturally shouldn't have these preoccupations and naturism allows us to realise this.
We are by our own nature naturists. We only had to “develop” the idea of naturism because we knew we were missing the natural choice of being with out clothes, and saw, as a result, that we were developing some rather damaging habits and hang ups. Naturists want a world where “naturism” is no longer a life choice for some because society learns to reclaim the idea that nudity can be and often is The Natural Choice for all.
The natural naked human body should be just as normal and everyday as nudity in the rest of the living world.
Naturism should be The Natural Choice for Humanity.
Logically there are millions of people out there who should be considering Naturism a natural aspect of their lives.
Those that want a greener and more pleasant world should see that reducing the amount of clothes we manufacture, transport, wash and then discard is a a valuable part of helping to save the planet.
Those that look to living, eating and buying with consideration to the environment and other ethical questions should recognise that naturism is simply another aspect of such living.
Those that dream of a fairer world with greater equality and true harmony and acceptance should look to naturism for a working example. Where the ideas of equality are not just a collection of buzz word but actually exists.
Those that are on a healing journey, or live have a holistic approach towards living should see that naturism is not just a part of such an attitude but also incredibly nurturing in itself. Helping many people to find a better relationship with themselves: body and soul.
Those that fear the human body and have negative relationships with their own nudity and the nudity of others can find a peace through the natural nudity of naturism. Naturism increases body awareness and acceptance. It confronts confusion and misinformation.
Those that hate their body or choose cosmetic enhancements often do so because of a mistaken belief that they simply do not measure up against others. In a naturally naked world such assumptions could not be made.
Those that fear the negative path that humanity is on and the increasing isolation and mistrust can learn that society can still be respectful, honest and caring when we break down the barriers and reclaim more traditional attitudes towards ourselves and each other.
Those that dislike the increasing fake world can find reality, in the genuine human world of naturism. Even on the artificial world of the internet with ANW!
Those that like outdoor adventure and exploring and getting off the beaten track, or enjoy being a little rebellious, thinking and acting beyond the main stream and find naturism a respectful and rewarding way to achieve this.
Those that seek a relaxed comfort in the lives can find naturism a wonderful way to do this while increasing their vitamin D in take and keeping their skin fresh and bacteria free.
Those that want to bring up their children with body confidence and maintain close, fun and active relationships in the family can find naturism a helpful ally.
Those that dislike the sexualisation of the human body, particularly across genders or ages will find that naturism actively confronts such issues by naturally allowing nudity to be normalised, desexualised and not shocking or taboo. Naturism works at removing sexual stereotyping and combatting sexualised guilt, anguish and abuse. It connects the genders, and helps build trust and respect.
The list can continue - offering so many reasons for so many people to see Naturism as part of Their Natural Choice for living a better life. We need to present naturism to all these people and more allowing them to wake up to the idea that naturism is a perfect fit for their lives.
Presenting Naturism as The Natural Choice
Naturism is only the Natural Choice if it is portrayed and maintained as the lifestyle we currently enjoy. We need to ensure that we stay true to traditional ideas of naturism and the 1974 INF definition: a way of life in harmony with nature characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and for the environment.
A good start is to follow the 7 basic concepts of Get Real listed above.
Discourage the abuse of naturism, the misuse of naturism and the misrepresentation of naturism. This is not just bad behaviour on beaches, but also social media profiles where people share hundreds of images of strangers, individuals who act like specific parts of the body are more important than others (to either hide or exhibit), flirtatious, pestering or innuendo based activity, comments or messages.
Consider the nudity and naturism you share. Look at you your behaviour through the eyes of someone who doesn't understand naturism.
Encourage naturism to remain universal for everyone. The trend for gender segregation, adult only, the interest in sexual orientation and the rejection of single men and children is not presenting the idea that naturism is natural, normal, non-sexual or safe. Changes in the way naturism is viewed that in turn blurs the line of acceptable behaviour and also encourages the growth of libertine venues and events.
Too often today naturism is presented as a elite life choice. Only for the rich and famous celebrities. Only for a certain circle of naturists that are in the “know.” Only for people who join certain organisations or clubs and hide behind high fences, taking part in a secret world. Influencers and writers often do not present everyday naturism but a special naturism that makes them seem unique, to often wishing to encourage those that are impressed to fund them rather than join them. Naturism needs to be more welcoming, more open, less secretive and willing to share an inviting broader appeal to the masses showing it as a choice for everyone. Something you can enjoy at home, in the garden, on the beach, in the countryside: as well as on your travels, at events and at venues and clubs. Naturism has mass appeal and we have to stop attempting to act like it is a not. We need the presentation of naturism to be real and representative, for it to grow beyond those who pay to go to naturist events and become something that is understood as a simple choice that millions embrace.
Presenting naturism as The Natural Choice also means that in time we will not have to start off by defending naturism to others or simply hiding it from them. Keeping naturism secret only encourages the mistrust of it.
If we present naturism in the proper way we can encourage others to really think about what naturism is, why it exists and why it should be a natural choice for them. Always feel free to offer ANW as a safe source of information and learning for those considering naturism to learn more and take their first steps into adding naturism as one of The Natural Choice's in their lives.
Considering Naturism as The Natural Choice.
A relaxed social approach to nudity is the sensible way to function in a home. Whether that is moving from bedroom to bathroom, sleeping, child care, caring for people with health problem or simply making a cup of coffee on a sunny day.
We have to learn to fear nudity, and often children find this is a learning curve that they just don't want to face.
This new habit doesn't remove the want to be naked or see others naked and this want can often come out in other more worrying ways as we age. The sheer volume of sexual sharing on the internet is a reflection of how our want to be naked becomes distorted and eventually shameful and anti-social.
When we consider the hang-ups so many of us carry about our bodies and nudity we do have to ask why should something that is so basically normal cause so many problem, and the simple solution is: we are not acting naturally. Clothing is not the natural choice, hiding is not the natural choice and although clothing serves a purpose on various levels we cannot imagine that our reliance on it as a barrier has made us a happier, better, or more well adjusted society. We are going against nature and that is why it has caused us so much trouble.
Even our natural need to be exposed is misinterpreted. People wear clothes that are “too revealing,” people are paid to strip, flashers are arrested for indecent exposure, children demand “I'll show you mind if you show me yours,” celebrities push the boundaries on what they can get away with on the red carpet. So much trouble over a basic want to be naked. Yet if we naturally accepted that nudity was an everyday part of life all these concerns would fade away.
We all want comfort and there is great and reassuring comfort found in naturism. and there is so much about ignoring the natural choice that makes no sense. The most obvious of these are wearing clothing on beaches and in water, not feeling that you can be naked in your home and garden on a sunny day, fearing being seen naked by the people you trust most in your life (family and friends), and not being able to naturally enjoy being in the countryside as nature intended.
The very fact that we describe being without clothes as being dressed in your birthday suit or as nature intended acts as a helpful reminder that Naturism is The Natural Choice.
ANW - The Natural Choice
In presenting naturism as The Natural Choice we should not shy away from the fact that ANW is The Natural Choice for naturism on the internet and beyond.
That ANW is founded on respect for each other, the community and naturism. We are 100% committed to maintaining and promoting naturism for everyone and welcoming all to the community irrespective of experience and position.
We believe in full equality for all within naturism and as Marc recently said in the RnR Podcast Ep.11 Nude and Happy (listen with ANW Membership): "I think ANW is probably the best online naturist community on Earth, that's for sure...We don't all agree, but we respect everyone and that has become so so rare...It goes beyond naturism..it is not just about naturism it is about being a human being." That is how we have always viewed ANW. We don't want the ANW community to be a great example of naturism, we want it to be a great example of humanity. We don't want it to be how naturists should be presented on the internet, we want it to be about how people should be presented on the internet. We believe that ANW has a duty to not just be something naturists should be proud of, but something that all humans should be proud of. The ability for a website to host a community that actually cares about each other. Something very human in this artificial environment. A community where respect and equality actually means more than it says on the tin.
ANW is The Natural Choice for naturists to connect on the internet but also to allow them to connect beyond the internet. Through safe meet ups organised using ANW Groups and Forum, and also at a variety of naturist options listed in the Explore section of over 4000 opportunities.
ANW is The Natural Choice for people running local clubs and national bodies, organising events, hosting venues, and much more to promote to a genuine and growing community of respectful and interested naturists, and a current average of 160,000 page views a day.
ANW is The Natural Choice because it presents genuine naturism through all sorts of features. Allowing any naturist to create albums, write blogs, take part in interviews and articles, record Podcasts, share videos, take part in honest and respectful forum topics, rate and review venues and locations and much more. Everyone can share their stories, their ideas, their philosophies because ANW places naturism as the star and fellow naturists as the fantastic supporting cast.
Importantly ANW recognises the incredible value of traditional naturism within the lifestyle. The importance of clubs and community both historically but also as part of naturism's future. That is why our new campaign for 2025/2026 promoting ANW and Naturism is The Natural Choice. For we believe that Naturism should be The Natural Choice for everyone, all over the globe, and that we all have the ability to make our planet A Naturist World.
