Playa Zipolite is well known for its clothing-optional beach, located along the south-western Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. Zipolite means Beach of the Dead in "Zapotec", it is believed that the ancient settlers buried their dead on the beach so later the place would become a fertile land destined for immortality!
In the 60's it became a popular destination among hippies and foreigners. This wide, mile-long strand of golden sand is enfolded by headlands and backed by palm groves. A beautiful but dangerous beach, the surf, usually tranquil in the mornings (but always with significant undertow), can turn thunderous by the afternoon.
Playa Zipolite’s renown stems from its status as one of the very few nude beaches in Mexico, although most who go bare usually stick to the far ends of the beach. You will find the west end of the beach (behind the large rock) more secluded. Whales, dolphins, and whale sharks can be spotted off the coast, and the sunset we have been told is one not to be missed.
