The give and take that I routinely see in forums here on ANW is the reason that ANW is the only naturist site that I support financially. Anna's writing is consistently excellent and always well worth reading. I don't think the original poster on this topic could foresee the discussions that it has generated.
Genital mutilation, be it circumcision, removal of the clitoris in females or the variety of piercings that now seem to be at least openly displayed and/or discussed will always be a topic to stir discussion. Here at ANW the discussion is always insightful and respectful, qualities often lacking in mainstream social media.
Kudos again to Anna (and of course Steve)!
Thanks Jonathan. We like to think that ANW is not just a great naturist experience on the internet but also a great example of how the internet and people can be with the right attitude.
The internet is a brilliant tool but is often misused. Human beings are in general pretty decent fair folk, but this often doesn't seem the case because the nasty, the cruel, the greedy and the ridiculous shout the loudest. Even in naturism there are too many examples of self serving attitudes and judgemental behaviour.
I think the vast majority of people don't want this and when we created ANW we hoped that those people would find a happy home here.
There's not really relevance, but the topic can come up. Here in the US, the majority are circumcised at birth, so most likely uncircumcised guys stand out a bit in naturist environments. Growing up, boys will even pick on those who are uncircumcised since it is such an anomaly here. In most other parts of the world, it is reversed and being circumcised is in the minority. So, most likely a guy who is circumcised in majority uncircumcised areas will stand out.
In the US, it is common for boys to be picked on, but they don't realize that outside the US they are in the majority. The rates of circumcision have seemed to fall over the years. Due to lower numbers of those intact in the US, uncircumcised men can grow up to face uncertainties and even anxiety/shame if they were previously picked due to status. The same can hold true for those born in areas where the norm is to be uncircumcised and move to areas where it is in the minority. Those who are not used to it may even find themselves asking questions (thought hesitant).
At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter in naturist environments, since most of the time the concerns stem from anxiety of what a potential partner would think. Since naturist environments are supposed to be non-sexual, it wouldn't matter. There are, however, times when those who are circumcised/uncircumcised encounter the opposite and they are curious. It isn't what they are used to. In general, I'm also more of an advocate of leaving it be unless medically necessary to go through with the procedure.
I was circumcised at birth and honestly I wish that choice were left up to me. Being a nudist hasn't had any impact on my wish to not be. It's more of a preference stemming from realizing that there was a big loss of sensitivity, which can have an impact on...erm...relations. Again, that's apart from naturism, so that's more of a personal preference. I've worked on restoring off and on with some progress, but it isn't the same. Even if fully "restored" I wouldn't view it any different.
i feel a bit of a con as a naturist, because people think im circumcised, when im not.
where some men, or boys, can have a long tight foreskin, some can have the opposite, as in, a short loose one.
as a boy it covered all of my penis, but at some point during puberty my penis outgrew it, so it permanently rolled back behind the glans, if i roll it over the glans it rolls back again.
it's just normal for me, it's what my penis looks like and for the most part nobody but naturists have seen it so i've no problem with it
As Dale brings up it can be tough in one way or another to be different from the average. The human race can be pretty cruel and particularly for youngsters it is nice just being able to fit in. We see it for example in shaving their legs. It will be really hard to change the trend of girls shaving because the majority will bully the minority that decide not to shave and most who would rather not will just do it to ensure they fit in. And an even bigger percentage will simply do it because it is the expected thing to do. Once something takes hold it is hard to change the trend around again. And I guess that is part of what has happened with circumcision. It has become the normal and who questions the normal?
It shouldn't matter one way or another within naturism, and I do not think it does, it is less common in the UK but everyone knows about it so it is simply accepted as a part of how people may look, it certainly isn't surprising or odd, and probably isn't something that people really notice in general. It isn't like we go around staring at each others body parts I could probably have a conversation with someone and not be able to say afterwards whether that person was circumcised or not. Just as I quite often don't notice if the shave their pubic region or not.
As Steve K reminds us above, we are all so varying in so many ways and that is part of the wide spectrum of how we can look and what is basically rather normal. I don't think you can spend much time in a naturist environment without realising that there is no average, no normal, no idea of perfection, no right or wrong, we simply are what we are. It may be that the rest of the world seems obsessed with judging and comparing and singling people out as perfect and labelling everyone else as imperfect but in naturism there just isn't space for that. We are all equally perfect and imperfect in our own ways, beauty comes in many different guises and every single one of us is rather unique despite that fact that we are also all rather similar too.
