I absolutely agree that there is a place for protective coverings in our lives. We live in areas that our bodies have not be designed to live in and do things that are bodies have not been designed to deal with, so part of our inventive minds is to allow us to live beyond nature and create tools including clothes to allow that to happen. As Jonathan nice puts it we have "twisted" our invention to mean and represent something else. Something that has led us to all levels of vanity, obsession and delusion. Clothes now maketh the man. A terrible idea when we all know it is what is inside us and our actions that truly define us. Just as clothes do not make us civilised or non-beastly.
No aliens exist? Is there life out there? Should we believe in God or gods and follow religions? Have different religions on balance done more harm than good? These are fair questions that may be debated for ever and I suspect that even if we were given very reasonable proof answering any question we would still find reason to doubt the answers. It is part of what we are as humans, we are simply unable to see eye to eye, we always place ourselves above others and particularly on national levels. The suicide bomber truly believes in his cause, just as sure as the Germans and the English both believed that God was on their side during World War I. It is part of the people we are and part of why we have developed such a need for clothing. We design ourselves and redesign ourselves and fragment and separate.
I am reminded of a story from one of our niece's. When the headmaster asked the school "Why do Brazil always do so well at football?" The answer was not based on playing from an early age in streets because it was a cheap and available past time , or football being treated as important by the government with training schools etc, the answer was "Because the Brazilians pray more to God to allow their team to win." He then told the school if they want England to win to encourage their families to pray for victory.
My original question was more about pondering over the idea of being civilised and what clothing means and whether given other circumstances (like a warmer climate) that we may simply have stayed away from clothes or if we had been a little wiser would we have simply used them for physical and not mental protection? I never meant to bring to question the existence of aliens or the existence of God. But just ask if Aliens did exist what would they think of our clothing and would they be dressed themselves? Like most sci-fi films - the question isn't about looking into the stars but instead looking at ourselves - our failings and strengths.
We still think the idea of using an alien lifeform as an example, is a worthy idea, as to answer the question one would need a neutral outsider from Earth, which is free of our cultural dogma. Would they see us as civilised?
Civilised has two definitions:
In order to address the first point, we feel that an alien lifeform would not consider us to be civilised as a race, because we have as yet not manged to keep a world of stable peace, and still allow the few to rule with all the wealth. Currently the top 1% own all the greater assets and wealth, which they use to control 4% as their puppets, who have control of around 90% via dogma, manipulation of facts, and intimidation. 5% fight that, and try to convince the 90% to wake up and make a stand and fight for their individual freedoms. So currently the basic standards of creating an advanced stage of social and cultural development is a long way off for us as a race.
We would argue that a part of a lack of advanced cultural development is clearly shown in the inability for the human race as a whole to separate sex from nudity, and accept our own bodies with a positive attitude, and the aliens would no doubt call us out on that.
Even within naturism currently there are elites who somehow see themselves better than the rest of us, and follow in similar traits to the rest of the world, (Greed, control, manipulation) to gain a greater share of the naturist’s world, so even naturists have some work to do. Our ability to accept nudity and sperate it cognitively from sex does, show a great understanding of life and culture compared to the other 90%, so that is bonus for us, but even so we would still appear flawed in the eyes of another life form.
If we go one step further in addressing definition one, we would also argue that compared to the animal kingdom, which has a greater understanding of the natural world than we do, we would argue that the Animals are far more respectful to the planet, and we feel an alien life form would make note of that. As Steve wrote earlier, an alien life form may very well see a dolphin as a far more advanced life form than man.
Animals accept the skin they are in as we once did as a race, we actually feel that mankind’s monetising of the human body in today’s modern world, using sex, clothes, and adornments, is to a degree a step back from our ability to achieve our full potential as a race, and highlights how unenlightened we have become compared to our ancestors, who tolerated and accepted nudity and embraced culture and community.
To address point two, we feel there is a 60/40 balance, because whilst all naturists have no issue whatsoever with people dressing, a large proportion of the dressed race have an issue with us being naked. Both communities have a great many polite and respectful people, and so civilised conversations can be had, and we have seen evidence of that with the many dressed people, we have spoken to about our naturism, and so we feel that an advanced life watching us or communicating with us from a system outside our universe, would feel heartened to see we are capable of much more than we currently are.
Our own conclusion on this would be we are work in progress with a lot of improvements to make, and we feel an alien life form would agree with that.
And here we are, going on a year and a half later, and it appears we ruined it for everyone. Sorry folks! I do hope some others will give us their input, as my wife and I do SO love all things Star Trek.
New thought: if aliens landed here naked, wouldn't they be attacked by all the billionaires and merchants who make their living on selling us clothing and stupid shoes? Hmmm...
