When we were researching clubs and venues for the inspiration area of ANW, a lot of clubs seemed to limit their refusal of tattoos to just those that are seen as aggressive, racist or similarly distasteful but are OK with tattoos in general. I wonder how these clubs measure such things - like film certificates?
Certainly a lot more clubs still refused members to have genital and breast piercings. I think a lot of clubs argued that it was bringing unnecessary attention to those parts of the body. Parts of the body that naturism argues are no more in need of attention than the elbow or the shin. The argument that we wear jewellery to attract attention to enhance our ears, necks and hands - why as naturists would we wish to attract attention to our genitals or make them look more attractive? I can see what they mean, but the other side of that is that if you had an elbow or a shin pierced would that be seen as a problem?
There are also many sites (naturist and otherwise) that claim that some body piercings and jewellery are sexually enhancing and pleasurable and if that is true then it would seem a little bizarre that clubs would ignore them, just as they would not allow Members to carry sex toys or stimulate themselves with their hands. The problem is how can anyone measure this? MaineNudeFamily make the point very well that they disagree with the idea that they are sexual, and surely only the individual wearer can truly be the judge of that.
Where do clubs find the lines between appropriate and inappropriate tattoos and piercings, can they even try to? I guess that is why many in the past just said no. Today tattoos and piercings are so common a club with a complete no attitude is going to seem detached from reality. Though some things that people do to their body are still quite shocking and are maybe meant to disturb. I saw an image once of a man who had had his penis sliced down the middle lengthwise had a stud in each end that were attached by chain to rings in his nipples that then pulled the two halves of his penis into a v-shape against his tummy. Clubs must feel they are damned if they do and damned if they don't and there is no easy middle ground.
I think naturists are pretty accepting on the whole and most like the idea of an "each to their own attitude." Clubs are going to wish to encourage this attitude but also know that there are certain things that people will find offensive and I do not envy these clubs finding the best answer.
Everything is grey, nothing is black and white. I like the idea that naturism helps people feel good about their natural bodies. That it helps us feel comfortable about the people we were born to be. The need to dress ourselves, decorate ourselves and alter ourselves should be seen as unnecessary to find confidence and comfort with our bodies. But there is not one of us that has not done something to alter ourselves. It may not be plastic surgery or a torso of tattoos, but we all will have done one of many other things - had our hair dyed, worn make-up, shaved, had our teeth straightened ... We are all enhanced in one way or another.
