I was part of the Forum on money and there were several people who before the EveryBody initiative was announced that were mentioning changing the name of BN to remove the word naturist. Finding a more modern society name. I remember once I lived in a block of flats in London, we had a communal area cleaner and he had some faults - instead of wanting to speak about the faults the answer was get rid of him and find another. Fair enough if he had been given warning or had the faults confronted - but that was not the case. We cannot just bail out every time things get tough, we need to repair, readjust and get back in the saddle. Like the resignation of Liz Truss- sometimes we have to keep on trying - not just give up.
I have always thought it was very unfortunate that two words have been developed - it has never really mattered that the front of a car has a bonnet or a hood depending on where you are from, but for a minority group having both naturist and nudist does cause a conflict in our "ism" which simply doesn't help with appreciation of what we are all about. Debates about differences seem rather foolish - you can force a difference but at the end of the day it is about enjoying time socially and non-sexually naked - some who think nudist may be more philosophical about the lifestyle then some who prefer naturist - that all depends on personality. It is like attempting to argue the difference between campaigning for naturism or crusading for naturism. Some campaigners may feel more like crusaders and vice versa. It would be great in the term Nudist (which has been so poorly used by the internet) was faded it and naturism allowed to flourish but either way we need to fight for one or both of these words.
I fought the case for the continued use of the word "naturism" at the forum when hearing other thoughts - "naked recreation" is simply to open to interpretation - as Rob so helpfully illustrates. If youngsters don't yet take the word on then we should encourage them to want to. IT isn't about branding them - it is about encouraging them to appreciate that their enjoyment of being naked comes with a name, and a set of ideas, that can be embraced on different levels.
Why am I a vegetarian? - health reasons, environmental reasons, cruelty reasons, taste reasons, allergy reasons, cost reasons....maybe others, maybe a mix of them maybe none - maybe I just like it.
The same with naturism - people can get what they want from it and do it for different reasons - none are right and none matter as long as they do it, enjoy it and respect it. There is much talk about body confidence, equality, diversity, mental health - this is all great but it is all the safe words that people like to hashtag - but this is naturism - we should insist that is understood. Without the name we can just flounder about. But naturism is something I feel modern society could really latch on to - is is so very positive and it is very much in tune with other ideas - green issues, respect, nature, striving for a more positive future, freedom of expression and choice. If we stand firmly behind the name then we can push it forward, if we stand away from the name we may all end up pushing in different directions.
Incidentally EveryBody is not for everybody - it states clearly that it is only for the over 18s
"EveryBody events are for those 18 or older to enjoy exploring a Naked world, pushing their personal boundaries and focusing on themselves.
We firmly believe that bringing children up in an environment where nakedness and body acceptance is normal but EveryBody is geared to an adult audience."
So already the name is failing and the market is diminishing, and segregation is being enforced and the idea that the events may be slightly seedy are being placed in peoples minds. But if it is for 18 plus but for younger adults -where does that leave those younger adults with children. Apparently they will not deny the oaps who seriously want to party. If there is an idea that BN is just old people then surely that idea will just flourish, youngsters will stay to EveryBody and families - well maybe they can get lost. OK there is NKD but to really enjoy a lifestyle you need more than a long weekend. And if the youngsters don't want to join BN then are the young families going to want to? As who will want to bring their children to events that are more geared to oaps? The best way to create a community is to encourage community values, unite us through naturism and give generations opportunities to mix with each other and learn from each other and support each other. Naturism is about nature and nature always had the generations working together for the good of the community.
