We will shortly be writing an article about minorities and naturism. As usual we don't want to simple jump in with obvious thoughts and ideas but instead look at a bigger more balanced picture.
We would love to hear from you if you feel that naturism has let you down due to your race, sexual orientation, a physical disability or for any other personal reason. Or maybe you have a really positive story to share.
Your thoughts on this topic are welcome on the forum but if you feel you want to talk more privately do send me a personal message.
Do you consider that naturism needs to even think about minorities isn't it enough that we should just welcome everyone? Naturism is a great leveller and could it not be argued that we are simply all naked humans and that is all that matters.
Naturists are already a minority group as far as society is concerned working as a unit despite all our other differences makes best sense. As long as we respect naturism and respect each is that not enough.
But maybe you have been made to feel unwelcome at a club or resort due to your sexual orientation or the colour of your skin. Maybe you have had nasty stares or been made to feel uncomfortable because of a physical difference to others around you? Could anyone be considered not perfect enough? I really hope that none of these things have ever happened.
The nature of some locations and opportunities will mean that those with mobility issues will miss out. What can we do about that? We certainly need more beaches with easy access.
But what about other aspects of who you are? Has your religion ever made a difference? How about your age or sex? Have you ever been rejected simply because you are a man or because you are under or over a certain age? Are you a victim of positive discrimination? There are simply too many of you in the club already and some minorities are required to change the ratio. In that respect does that place women or under 30s/40s in a minority group as far as naturism in concerned?
I have read reports of people saying things like "I am not going to that beach because it is almost all gay men" or "I don't want to be the only woman there." Does it make any difference as long as everyone is well behaved and naturist appropriate? In some situations can a "minority" group actually be the majority. And should we care?
Are there other minority instances that can shapes your experience. Maybe the only person on the beach with body hair? What about tattoos or piercings - have you ever felt unwanted for having them - or have you ever felt out of place not having them?
So where do we draw the line? What is minority placement in naturism? Not having a good enough tan? Having white bits?
Surely we are accepting of each other? Naturism is supposed to teach us all about body awareness and encourage a friendly attitude to all. In my experience we are wonderfully accepting but is it always so?
I look forward to your thoughts.
