Schiermonnikoog is the smallest inhabited Wadden island. The only village on the island is also called Schiermonnikoog. Due to its varied landscape of dunes, woods, mudflats and boulders, as well as diverse flora and fauna, the island has been designated as a National Park. It has a length of 16 km and a width of 4 km, which makes it the widest beach in Europe. It is also reported to be the cleanest in the Netherlands.

Its shallow waters are great for swimming, and the windy climate attracts many wind surfers as well as naturists. The whole beach is suitable for naturist use except between markers 2 and 7. Due to the absence of cars Schiermonnikoog is a very quiet and romantic.
