Rainbow Hot Springs is a relatively unknown area located north of Pagosa Springs in the Colorado Mountains. It features a waterfall, and two pools along the San Juan River north of Pagosa Springs and is suitable for a spot of naturist skinny dipping.
Once you approach the Springs there are many tents scattered around the site. The Forest Service do not require back-country permits to camp here, making Rainbow Hot Springs a prime camping spot in the warmer months of the year. In addition, it is also popular for horseback riders and hunters. When there’s snow on the ground, you’ll see snowshoers and cross-country skiers alike.
A 10 mile round trip, over moderate trail leads you to a pool on the river measuring 20 feet by eight feet, giving room for approx 10 people, with a temperature of about 95°F. The other pool is smaller, large enough for three, and reaches 105°F and provides outstanding views of the West Fork Canyon and the adjacent San Juan River provides a quick cool-down.
