Saunders Beach is situated on the suburbs of Townsville, offering good access.The beach is largely untouched and visitors still literally have 6km of beach to themselves, and is unofficially enjoyed by naturists.

It is bordered by Deep Creek to the north and the Black River in the south. Swimming is best toward high tide and away from the creek mouths, which can have strong tidal currents. Dense casuarina trees provide shade and shade behind the beach.
