Description
Overall a great beach in terms of size (most of the season, explained below) and scenery....you can be on a nude beach with your toes in the water and looking at the NYC skyline in the distance. For much of the season the beach is large enough to accommodate several hundred people, but during certain weeks the space is more limited to protect nesting areas for certain birds. Arriving early (before 10am) is a big advantage. The parking lot will fill up quickly after that. An early arrival gives you a better choice of location closer to the water. For most of the season there are lifeguards from approximately 10am-4pm. Park rangers patrol the area and will deal with unlawful activity. There are rules posted on site prohibiting tents or other enclosures. While there is a restroom and food vendors on the weekends, it is a long walk from the beach to both. It is wise to bring your own refreshments. My observation has been that you can be as social or private as you like. There can be clusters of loud partiers, but there are also plenty of folks just reading a book or listening to headphones. There are a couple of regular "looky-loos" who oddly walk around in long pants and other clothing, but they can be shooed away if needed.
