Papamoa Beach is a busy touristy beach with lots of development, located between Mount Maunganui in the west, and the Kaituna River in the east.
The beach is huge, with 16km of fine golden sand, here are numerous beach access points marked at regular intervals along Papamoa Beach road, which is densely populated with residential and holiday homes. You can park on the side of the road here and wander down to the beach via any of these public walkways. Strong rips and large waves can occasionally form so be wary of the conditions, especially if you’re not swimming near the patrolled lifeguard area.
The area of the northwestern end of Papamoa Beach has an unofficial nude section about 200 meters down from Sunbrae Grove public access. There are no trees here to provide shade. This is a well-known nudist area and has been so forty plus years, despite the new developments here, it seems this beach is long enough to cater for everyone. Head for the dunes situated on the beach side.
